What can students get involved in at the University Campus of Esports?

Two female students sat facing screens running a live broadcast with the University Campus of Esports logo in the top left corner.

At the University Campus of Esports, we pride ourselves in how many opportunities we can offer for our students to get involved with.

In this article, International Esports Business and Digital Media student, Ethan Reilly, highlights five of the many activities and opportunities that you can involve yourself in as a student at the institution.

1. Freshers and Refreshers Week:

The first thing that students at the University Campus of Esports will end up getting involved with is likely going to be Freshers week, which takes place in the first week before the academic calendar begins.

It is a week filled with activities and fun opportunities for all students to immerse themselves in, and it gives you the chance to make some friends before you start and find some people on your course.

The activities change for every Freshers and Refreshers week, so the timetable is always a mystery and very fresh every time you go to one. Refreshers week is around January time, and is in between term one and term two to give a little break before you start your course modules again.

2. Work Experience:

There are many students that have already played a massive role in big events such as BLAST, that took place in London not too long ago – with many students having paid roles to work at the event which was a big success for the students and our institution.

There was also the London Lock In event that took place at the Red Bull Gaming Sphere, which was an entirely student-run event from the broadcasting, the commentators, and even the players.

However, the most exciting opportunity that has been provided by the institution is the work experience that a few of the students took part in for Gen.G in South Korea, which for the students was a truly unforgettable experience. It was a great look for them into how a competitive esports organisations runs behind the scenes.

Throughout the academic year, there are plenty of activities you can get stuck into to support your studies, so make sure to keep your eye out for these experiences!

3. London Legion:

Next up are the opportunities students are provided within London Legion and London Legion TV. There are so many roles across both areas of the organisation which are all just as important to the running of London Legion in its entirety.

Firstly, there are so many opportunities for players which are generally determined at tryouts early in the year. For the games that we compete in we have at least one competitive team per game if not two, however that does not necessarily mean that you must play competitively to get involved.

There are plenty of teams to play on which are not as competitive, and focus on casual enjoyment. As for the competitive teams, there are only so many spots for each game so the best of the best end up on our teams.

This doesn’t mean that if you do not make a team, you can’t be involved though. There are many roles on the teams besides players whether it be a coach or even a manager you will always have something to do.

There will always be space to be filled for London Legion TV too, which could be very good to get involved in if you are trying to go down to a more social media-based route in esports.

4. Work with British Esports on the Student Champs:

As their exclusive university-level partner, we help quite a lot with the streams for the British Esports Student Champs using our very own broadcast room, and broadcast teams built solely of students from the institution.

There are so many roles within our broadcast teams, so there will be something that at least turns your head or sounds interesting that you might want to try.

If you like a more management-based role you might want to try and work yourself up to try and become a director or producer for the broadcasts. If you prefer a more hands-on job you might want to try something like V-Set, V-Mix or even Replay Operations, as there is a lot of software to get adjusted to.

On top of everything that is offered within our broadcast sector, it is also very good work experience and will look great on your CV. Even more so if you are looking to go into a broadcasting or live streaming route as it is not an easy field to gain quality work experience.

5. Paid Opportunities:

Fortunately enough for the students at the institution, we offer a lot of paid opportunities throughout, and even after, term time. There are career fairs which students can attend at schools to advertise the institution which are paid at an hourly rate.

There are also external opportunities that pay such as working with BLAST and other companies that work with the institution to provide students with paid opportunities throughout the year as well.

On top of this, there are also a lot of paid opportunities internally at the University Campus of Esports, depending on what you can offer. We already have multiple students that are hired for a variety of things from technology support, writing, and social media, with more roles coming year by year.

Overall, as a student at the University Campus of Esports, these are just a few of the many things that you will be able to immerse yourself in – showing everything we have to offer with more opportunities on the rise as the year progresses.

We have very limited spaces remaining on our courses for 2024 entry through Clearing, and further information on how to apply can be found in this handy guide.
